Movie Making Technology

Movie making technology has drastically improved and grown more complex since the first movie was made around 100 years ago. From its humble beginnings as moving photographs, it has evolved into a tantalizing experience that thrills our senses and stimulates our minds.

In the early days, movies were rudimentary and short, lasting no more than a couple of minutes. One peculiar thing about these movies was that they were all silent. Though inventors tried to incorporate synchronous sound with the pictures, no practical method was devised till the late 1920s. But that did not stop these silent movies and their stars from becoming timeless classics.
Recognize him? Yes, that’s Charlie Chaplin, one of the most well known comedians of all time.

By the 1930s, the sound problem was solved and movies really took off, heralding in what is known as the Golden Age of Hollywood. This era is filled with great classics like Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind and King Kong. Hollywood stars also flourished and many of them, like Clark Gable, Katharine Hepburn, and Humphrey Bogart are still admired to this day. No small feat, when you consider that all these movies were in black and white.

Color movies only went mainstream in the mid 1950s with the introduction of the monopack color film by Eastman Kodak. From there, advances in film and also audio technology vastly improved movies, opening up entirely new and novel avenues for storytelling.
Today, movies are an immersive audio visual experience that leaves its audience spellbound. Most movies boast of surround sound and usually come in hi-definition format, able to deliver superb quality sound and crisp, clear visuals. The use of special effects and CGI (computer generated imagery) also enables movie makers to bring our very imagination to the screen.
New developments in movie technology, such as 3-D format, promises to bring movies to an entirely new level. Could we actually see the development of a 3-D interactive entertainment system in the future? Only time will tell.

Delivering Great Presentations like Steve Jobs

With the announcement of Apple iPad just behind us, it’s time to look at the legend behind Apple’s meteoric success, CEO Steve Jobs and his captivating presentations. What is the secret to this man’s success?
Well, beyond the obvious hard work, practice, and attention to detail to each and every one of his slides and keynotes, there are some recurring habits that Jobs uses to make his presentations that much more captivating.
Those who want to find out more about how this amazing man delivers his product presentations can check out his famous speech delivered to students at Stanford.
The way he presents is very simple, using minimum text, almost NO bullet points, minimal jargon (except where necessary, like the spec sheets) and powerful phrases like “the world’s thinnest laptop” when revealing the Macbook Air.
Here is some information on the methods and techniques that make Steve Job’s presentation so exciting and charming. He has even been described as being able to project a “Reality Distortion Field” during his keynotes, allowing people to get excited over things that, in retrospect, aren’t that interesting and can even be downright problematic, such as the absence of a CD-rom or USB port in the Macbook Air.
Steve Job’s make great use of numbers in his keynotes, as it is a simple and powerful way of conveying information to ordinary people. Although he seems to have lost a lot of weight due to a fight with cancer, it appears that if the recent iPad indicated anything, its that he will be around for a while longer to sell us more expensive money-sucking toys.

iPhone App by Brothers UK Allows Users to Scan and Print from Phone

The app, known as the Brother iPrint&Scan allows users to wirelessly print from and scan to their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, with a compatible printer from the range of Brother’s latest inkjet multifunction printers.
Since smartphones are such an essential tool for the consumers today, this app comes as a very convenient tool for printing and scanning.
The app is fully compatible with Brother’s range of multifunction printers that have wireless capability released from 2009 onwards. Certain models with network interface are also compatible when connected to a wireless network.
Brother iPrint&Scan is now available at the Apple iTunes App Store. The app itself is free and requires the iPhone 3.0 Software Update or later and a compatible Brother printer.
The appwas initially launched in English, though there are plans to launch the app in French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Dutch versions by the end of 2010. Also, similar apps are planned to be developed by Brother that are compatible with other smartphones including the Google-based Android 1.6 handsets.
Personally I think this is a great idea and I’m sure there are a lot of people who have also been waiting for an app such as this too.
What I find most inconvenient is that the app is geared towards printers/scanners from Brothers only. I realise that as it was developed by Brothers, it’s obvious that the app would only work with the company’s printers. I hope that there will be similar apps developed in the future that works with different brands of printers too.
